But to say that it sets a new standard for the MCU, I find this concept laughable. ![]() I'll accept the former, since the first two Thor movies weren't of the highest of standards to begin with. ![]() The film that RottenTomatoes' consensus stated 'sets a new standard for its franchise.and the rest of the MCU'. Having said that, this brings us to Ragnarok. Anyway, the thing is that Norse mythology is so rich, and I really do fucking mean that (look at the recent God of War videogame) that, you'd think, they'd make for considerably better and epic movies than we've seen from the Thor franchise so far. I think Loki's days, unless some major retooling is being done, as a major MCU villain are done and he's now Thor's brother, whom he can never really fully trust. He's definitely an asshole, but he's an asshole that you like. Though, to be fair, Loki has "switched" allegiances so many times that it's difficult to call him a full-on villain anymore. They really didn't put their best efforts forward, despite Thor having the best villain of the entire MCU not named Thanos and that is Loki. The second movie, while forgettable in the grand scheme of things, proved to be solid popcorn entertainment. I'll summarize my thoughts quickly, I thought the first Thor was kind of trash, possibly the worst film (in my opinion) in the MCU. That may be a bit harsh, of course, particularly given how good this movie actually is. We should probably talk about the Thor franchise, shouldn't we? In my opinion, of all the franchises (and I'm not including Avengers), Thor would have to be the worst of them all. After Phase 3, who knows what comes next? Anyway, I suppose that's neither here nor there. There's still three more films from Phase 3 yet to come. And that's just if you include Black Panther and Infinity War, not including films like this one, Homecoming, among others. Phase 3 is still going on as we speak and, really, might be the most commercially successful series of films of all time. Phase 2 did have Guardians of the Galaxy and Winter Soldier (two of Marvel's best ever films), but every other film wasn't that great. Phase 2 leading to Age of Ultron which, honestly, didn't really blow me away. They planted the seeds, slowly, for the eventual joining of the Avengers four years after the original Iron Man came out. They didn't rush anything, though they very well could have. This plan started with Iron Man ten years ago. The thing is, they knew that building this into a monster would take time. But I have to give respect where it's due and say that Kevin Feige and his team have done a tremendous job at making Marvel Studios the juggernaut that it is today. To keep all of that lore, all of that mythology, all of those stories and characters in line to where it all makes, at the very least, a little bit of sense? I've certainly had my issues with Marvel movies in the past and, I'm sure, I'll continue to have them if they do something I don't enjoy. You realize how difficult that actually is. 2, I believe), and that's that not only do you have to make a movie that's enjoyable on its own merits, but you also have to make a movie that fits within the canon of the larger MCU and, at the same time, also hinting at future events that might not even play out in the same franchise that the hints happened in. Here's the thing, and I believe I've already mentioned this in one of my prior MCU reviews (only one on Letterboxd is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. I've always marveled (heh.I hate myself) at how Marvel Studios has managed to create, maintain and handle their absolutely fucking massive cinematic universe. Lastly, is there a better song to go with an action sequence than Led Zeppelin's "Immigration Song?" If so, I can't think of one. The majority of the action and dialogue scenes with Hulk proves the point that the Hulk is SO much better as a supporting character than. Without her guidance would he really have manned up and jumped out of a space ship double wielding machine guns?!?! I love the way she just makes Karl Urban her boy-toy. If Natalie Portman doesn't bring her A-game to Love and Thunder, (which she didn't to the first two) I'd like to start a petition that Tessa Thompson takes her place (without the horrible Valkyrie outfit).Ĭate Blanchett rips it as Maleficent (er, I mean Hela). Hemsworth is so comfortable in the role you can't imagine anyone else playing the character.Īnd damn if Tessa Thompson isn't the most bad-ass (anti-)heroine of the MCU - she's like the Han Solo for Marvel. is as irreplaceable as Tony Stark/Iron Man. “It was a really good opportunity to start seeing how people buy watches,” she recalls.Īs for a full-blown watch-making project, however, that didn’t come until 2013 when the pair won the Lonmin Design Innovation Award for their pendant watch, named “Stella”, crafted in platinum. Struthers’ first job in the watch industry was in a jewellers in Birmingham. While both were learning, they were also able to work in related fields. After that, she completed a PhD in horology as well.Ĭraig came to his studies a little later, having already worked for a spell in government IT – which he freely says he “absolutely hated”. And she says she was able to “tailor” a history of art and design masters to suit a horology theme in order to take her studies further. She trained in various crafts useful to her trade, however – from diamond grading to silversmithing. “They were just like, ‘No, you can’t do horology here’,” she remembers. Rebecca found this out fairly quickly when she tried to find horology courses that weren’t based at Birmingham City University. “It’s not a very well-known or advertised trade to go into,” admits Burtoft. Then, there is a clock restoration course at West Dean College near Chichester and some classes offered by Epping Forest Horology Centre near London. There’s the British School of Watchmaking in Manchester and the BHI offers various programmes, including distance learning, for example. He had begun a course run by the British Horological Institute (BHI) that was also based at the School of Jewellery.Ī current BHI veteran and tutor, Alan Burtoft, tells me that there are just a handful of places in the UK where budding watch- and clockmakers can do this sort of course. It was around this time, in 2004, that she first met Craig. Back then, she had no idea that watchmaking was a career, but students studying horology, the art of making clocks and watches, suggested it might be a good fit for her. Rebecca was just 16 when she applied to study a two-year course at the School of Jewellery at Birmingham City University. Then they come out to our location – our workshops have very much been designed to fit in with that.” “All of our clients at the moment are pretty much word-of-mouth,” says Rebecca when I ask if this layer of mystique is intentional. It has the feel of a Victorian study, but the old factory building housing the studio gives nothing away to the passer-by. Archie, a young Staffordshire terrier, snoozes on his blanket. The walls are painted dark green, a shade labelled “Dragon Song” that caught Rebecca’s eye when the duo were decorating. Rebecca welcomes me into the largest of three rooms – a warm space filled with antique bits of furniture and bookshelves. Hidden inside is a frankly magical little place – a watchmaker’s workshop run by Craig and Rebecca Struthers, a husband and wife team. Since mechanical watches require routine servicing to clean, lubricate and calibrate, the industry is faced with a large and growing number of high-grade watches that will require skilled maintenance. However, in the 1990’s, sales of high-grade mechanical watches began to rebound and continue to grow. (from 40 twenty-five years ago to less than 10 today). The result was a dramatic drop in the number of watchmaking schools in the U.S. The shortage originated in the 1980’s when the quartz watch debut threatened the future of the mechanical watch and the demand for highly-qualified watchmakers. In 2001, Rolex established LWT as their contribution towards addressing the major challenge that concerns the entire watch industry – the shortage of watchmakers who are qualified to service the high-end brands. ![]() Even if he can't answer your call due to the ever-growing pile of presents in his sleigh, you can hear his voice right now by calling the number above. LEGO 2K Drive has what could possibly be one of the best LEGO building block setups we've seen in a while, as they give you multiple options from various kits to make a car however you see fit and then race it on the track. The last aspect we got to check out was car customization. Its a great system for couch co-op or online multiplayer to have fun. Another was a speed competition similar to Red Light, Green Light where we tried to get to the end of a raceway without being spotted or else we'd explode and have to start over. One of them was trying to locate a very specific character on the map before anyone else, with very few clues on where you might be able to locate them. The other side to the co-op were mini competitions. The reality is that they made these races so that anyone could compete in them and have an equal chance of doing well or finishing dead last. I myself won a race, but the rest were close affairs where I was all over the board. That player won a single game, and then found themselves between 3rd-8th place in other races. To be very blunt: there's no way to predict a winner. ![]() ![]() Our group was put into a few different races against each other where we took in a car we really felt could do the job and hit the tracks in a proper competition. I really appreciated the time and care that went into making these worlds feel different instead of carbon copies of one another.įrom there, we moved into the co-op and competition side of things. It became very clear that the game has a ton of experiences for players to go through so that it isn't just you racing around in the same courses with different window dressing on them. Because why would you make a game called LEGO 2K Drive without featuring the sets that made the IP what it is today? While we did get to experience a great chunk of this as part of our demo, the reality is that there's just too much to experience in a single session for a few hours. Each area has its own theme going for it, all of them modeled after LEGO sets you'll recognize right off the bat. Once you conquer that race, the world will open up a little more and send you to a new area filled with more races and challenges. The goal of every level is to beat all of the races and specific challenges that have been laid out in front of you to eventually make it to a major race. One we got stuck on for a minute was clearing a jump in a specific amount of time, but we did it. Another was pushing a giant egg into a frying pan. One of them was racing into the side of a rock wall where someone had painted a tunnel, ala Road Runner style. You'll also be able to use them in challenges that have been spread across the map, which range from the simplest time challenges to the silly. Once you beat that racer, you'll gain access to their car that you can then use in future races. Each racer has their own personality and a specific car, tied to a location on the map that will turn into a unique track. The first is to find races where you'll challenge specific racers who are looking for someone to beat. You'll take your car around the map and explore a couple of different options at your disposal. LEGO 2K Drive is divided up into several maps that you'll travel to by land, sea, air, and more. Once we were done learning about how to race and learning all the tricks of the trade, we were unleashed onto the world in general. It is one of the easiest and smoothest transitions in a game I've seen in a long time, as you hear the LEGO pieces form and watch them transform. When you hit the air for a specific period of time, you turn into a plane. When you go off-road, you get better tires. Especially since the game transitions between vehicles as you go, so if you are in a car and dive into the water, your vehicle instantly changes into a boat. There was no wrong way to learn, and it was the smoothest lesson structure ever. Proofread: and corrected by Nicole McKenzie. It seems that Asus intends for the ROG Ally to be better than the Steam Deck when it comes to performance. Meanwhile, the Steam Deck comes in three different versions, each with different amounts of storage these are priced at $399, $529, and $649, respectively. In this way, the Steam Deck is more accommodating since it can appeal to people of different budgets. That's because it should be able to run more games on Stream, not just ones that are "Steam Deck compatible."Īs far as pricing goes, a leak claims that the Ally handheld will sell for $700, but this has yet to be confirmed. I briefly mentioned this previously, but the ROG Ally can be a better Steam Deck than the Steam Deck itself. I've been comparing the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally throughout this page, but now it's time to discuss things that haven't been mentioned yet. ![]() Take a look to get a better feel for the upcoming handheld. The ROG UK Instagram account has uploaded an official video of the ROG Ally unboxing. It looks like it will be a powerful enough mobile processor, but we cannot wait to run tests on it to really see what it's capable of. The ROG Ally uses a custom AMD Zen 4 RDNA3 4nm APU, basically a processor with an integrated graphics card that was designed specifically for this handheld. Space can also be expanded using the built-in MicroSD card slot. If this is true, then this means that it is the same as Steam Deck's premium version and should be able to handle several games. However, there are rumors and leaks stating that it is 512GB. The amount of storage the ROG Ally provides hasn't been revealed officially. ![]() This alone makes it a better option for anyone who has games on more than just Steam. This means that it will be able to run the best PC games from various services (yes, even Steam games that aren't compatible with Steam Deck) and won't be as limited as Steam Deck's SteamOS 3.0. One of the things that makes the ROG Ally so appealing is that it actually uses Windows 11 as its operating system. It's also worth noting that the Ally features all of this while still managing to weigh slightly less than the Steam Deck (as verified by attendees during the last hands-on event). Ports: 1x USB-C port, 1x PCIe port, 1x headphone jackĪs a quick comparison of Steam Deck and Ally specs tables shows, the Ally will support a higher resolution at 1080p compared to Steam Deck's 800p, a higher refresh rate of 120Hz compared to Steam Deck's 60Hz, and offers a built-in PCle port (which Valve's handheld doesn't have) to help connect it to other devices.
